Sillfield Farm is just north of junction 36 on the M6 motorway as it starts to carve through the spectacular scenery of The Lake District.

Peter Gott is Cumbria's great cheese character with his own farm produced cheeses and bacons, he travels to farmers markets, Country Fairs and Borough Market in London (Fri & Sat). I have a picture from The Financial Times of Peter in full cheese maker's gear delivering a cheese to 10 Downing Street with a petition to lay-off redtape that causes higher costs to small cheese makers.

Rural self sufficiency is at the heart of what Peter believes in and practices by making cheese, keeping free-range wild boar and rare breed pigs. His bacon sandwiches and sausages are memorable.

Using a Westmorland recipe from when cheese was made on the farm in the 1920's, he creates Westmorland original and Westmorland mature. He also adds herbs and spices to a variety called Cheese Wonders and a smoked variety called Lune Valley Smoked Cobbles. I caught Peter recovering from his appearance at the first English Farmers Market held in Paris where he successfully sold out all his cheese and bacon to the French.
