The farm
is high up and close to Beacon Fell, where in 1932, Richard and Annie
Butler moved in to grow crops and raise livestock. In the summer, Annie
made cheese to barter for grain at the market. Later, their son Tom and
his wife Jean took over the cheese making in 1969 using the family's traditional
recipe to make Tasty Lancashire cheese.
When daughter Gillian and her husband Colin returned to Inglewhite, they
brought big company skills of packaging for the shopper and marketing
experience dealing with the big multiples. They took the big gamble of
investing in expensive packaging equipment to be able to supply Marks
& Spencer and all the main supermarkets. Getting it right and making
it easy for the multiples, meant they could expand the range of regional
cheeses. Their maturing and grading skills based on the distinctive ten
month Tasty Lancashire has made them very busy.
One of their major triumphs has been to ensure that the Butlers name remains
on the label of the supermarkets they supply. So often the supermarket
group wants to keep it a secret where and who made it.
