Close to
Beacon Fell, on the outskirts of Goosnargh is this small family dairy.
Peter's grandfather started making Lancashire Cheese in the 1930's, a
tradition passed on by his father and now to his son Steven - four generations.
Grace, Peter's wife, can trace cheese making back to her grandmother.
Greenfields Dairy was bought by Peter & Grace in 1985 and employs
five people making traditional clothbound cheeses by hand. Peter's father
made one of the earlier versions of Crumbly Lancashire, a one day curd
cheese as well as a two day curd Tasty and Creamy Lancashire. For the
rest of their range, they make a variation of 15 additive cheeses with
herbs, spices and fruits.
Available from The Cheese Hamlet, Didsbury, on market stalls, particularly
in Clitheroe and Macclesfield, and in food shops around the region.
