This is one
of the farms owned by Her Majesty the Queen on the Duchy of Lancaster
Estate. Andy's father first rented this 140 acre farm in 1956 which is
beside the transport corridor of the M6, A6, Lancaster Canal, Westcoast
Railway & the River Wyre. Close to Beacon Fell, the water table is
high in the fields.
Andy and Lisa have faced up to the changes in dairy farming by diversifying
with a new dairy in January 2000 to make cheese. The farm actively promotes
wild life and their cows which includes Jersey are very well cared for.
Fred Cruise, a peripatetic Lancashire cheese maker who worked at the Dairy
Crest Creamery in Longridge before it was closed down in the 90's, taught
them the art of cheese making. They make a small range including Crumbly
Lancashire and a range of additive cheeses with chives, spring onion,
red onion, apricots, cranberries, chilli and pickle.
Available from any of the 17 farmers markets they attend where the buying
public, love to meet the farmer and cheese maker for "proper cheese".
Andy & Lisa came with me to Brussels in December last year to a cheese
and beer tasting for 400 in the European Parliment, hosted by our NW MEPs.
