The A6 main road goes past the front door and the busy mainline west coast trains rattle past the back of this dairy, below Beacon Fell. Chris Sandham is proudly a third generation Sandham cheese maker, making only traditional Lancashires, just as his grandfather began in 1929. Milk is brought in from four local farms all year round and the curds are turned by hand. A fifth farm sends organic milk with a slightly different flavour and round the back of the dairy he smokes his own cheese. Sandhams Creamy has a distinctive butteryness, which makes it a great cooking cheese that releases more flavour as it melts.

In December 2001, Chris drove his chill van full of cheeses from the region's cheese makers across to Brussels for a memorable Celebration of Beers and Cheeses from the North West organised with the region's ten MEPs. Right in the central atrium of European Parliament, 400 officials turned up for the tasting.
